Sapropelic Pycnic is the solo project of Kathleen Baird, member of the ever evolving avant psych folk group Spires That In The Sunset Rise. A Love Supreme is her second release and the debut release from the No Index label. Written in tribute to John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme and to celebrate its 50 year anniversary.
On the opening track, “Elation Elegance Exaltation” Baird sings from the poem by Coltrane included in his liner notes on A Love Supreme as lyrical inspiration while the saxaphones of Taralie Peterson intertwine around her. Peterson (also of Spires) is featured on alto sax on two tracks the other being with Andy Ortmann (modular synth) and Troy Schafer (violin/keyboard) on the epic interpretation of “A Love Supreme”. Baird also uses lyrics by Gil Scott Heron from his “And Then He Wrote Meditations” written in tribute to Coltrane and A Love Supreme accompanied only by her piano creating a sparse but intensely emotional channeling of his sentiments.
